The Walks

There is a great variety of walks directly from the village, ranging from half hour strolls to whole day expeditions.

The Lady's Well circuit is a forestry commission waymarked walk that takes in both holy wells, a path through the forest and a section of road beside the Holystone burn and can easily be completed in half an hour. An alternative half hour walk goes along the river bank and circles back by the (very quiet) road.

There is a one hour circuit mostly on the edge of the forest that offers a chance to get some sun and beautiful views as well as both oak woodland and conifer forest. (see pictures left).

Crossing the river by a footbridge allows access to a choice of easy walks from one hour long to three or four that are partly on the haugh (flat land beside the river) then going up a steep bank through  woodland to circle back to the village.

Those who prefer a more challenging walk can tackle the Five Kings - a whole afternoon walk through a farm and past a neolithic stone circle onto the top of  Beacon Hill with the best views - see the Yardhope photo below - and a scramble across a heather moor to get back to Holystone.   An alternative whole afternoon walk is waymarked by the forestry commission and takes in a waterfall in a fairy dell. Another fairly challenging walk is the two miles through the woods or over the crags to Harbottle where there is a pub and a castle.

If you are planning to go walking, bring waterproofs and walking boots.  Wellies with two or three pairs of socks may be OK but fashion boots are not suitable.  We can provide you with maps and compasses and may be able to lend you some other equipment.

In addition to the walks, bikes are available and there are a number of  circuits on quiet roads with stunning views ranging from one hour to a whole day - as long as you don't mind tackling a few hills.  If you are lucky enough to be here in a heat wave, there is wild swimming in the Coquet.

It may be possible to extend your holiday and stay an extra day or two if you would like to do more walking than the yoga timetable allows.
