Excursions

If you come by car, there is a wide range of possible excursions. There are some wonderful walks and mountain biking opportunities in the Cheviot hills and the Coquet valley (see photo below). Rothbury, fifteen minutes drive away, has basic shopping, tea rooms and galleries. The Cragside estate, on the edge of the town, was once the home of Lord Armstrong; it has extensive gardens, an eccentric house (see picture right), and is well worth a visit.  Alnwick castle with its famous garden is thirty minutes drive to the east and the town of Alnwick offers a wider range of shops. The stunningly beautiful beaches of the Northumbrian coast start a further 15 minutes beyond Alnwick (see pictures left and right, below), while the excavated forts of the Roman Wall are one hour’s drive to the south of Holystone (see picture left).  While the Kielder Sculpture Trail  combines walking or mountain biking with art.
